What people ask us when they ring.

What is a grease trap and how does it work?

A grease trap sits between your kitchen sinks and the drain. Water slows down inside it, so fat and oil float to the top and food bits sink. Only the clean water in the middle goes on to the sewer. Once it fills with what it has caught, it stops working, which is the point we come and empty it.

How much does grease trap cleaning cost in Ireland?

Most kitchens pay between €200 and €500 a service. Size, how easy the trap is to reach and how often you have it done all move the price, and an emergency call-out costs more. We quote before we book you in, and a scheduled contract works out cheaper than ringing round when the trap overflows.

How often should a grease trap be cleaned?

Once it is about a quarter full of grease and solids. That is monthly for a busy fried-food kitchen, every two to three months for most restaurants, and three to six months for a small café. We work your interval out from the trap size and what your kitchen puts through it rather than putting you on a standard schedule.

Is a grease trap a legal requirement in Ireland?

Yes, for food businesses putting kitchen wastewater into the public sewer. You need a trade effluent licence from Uisce Éireann and a properly sized trap is a condition of it. We size traps to IS EN 1825 and keep the records that prove the trap is being maintained, which is the other half of staying licensed.

What happens during a grease trap cleaning?

We open the trap, pump out everything inside, scrape down the walls and baffles, check the unit works and close it up. The waste leaves with us under our national waste collection permit. You get the service record and the disposal record afterwards, usually the same day.

Can I clean my grease trap myself?

You can scoop the top of a small trap, but it will not keep you compliant. The waste has to be taken away by a permitted contractor and you need a disposal record for inspection. We hold the permit, do the full clean rather than the top layer, and hand you the paperwork.

Who is responsible for the grease trap, the landlord or the tenant?

Usually the tenant. Most commercial leases put cleaning and proof of service on whoever runs the kitchen, and the licence is held by the food business. Check your lease. If the trap is yours to look after, we can put it on a schedule and send the records to you or your landlord.

What is the difference between a grease trap and a grease interceptor?

Size and where it sits. A trap is the smaller unit inside the kitchen and needs emptying more often. An interceptor is a larger tank in the ground outside and goes longer between services. We service both, and we work out which one suits a kitchen when we design a new system.

What happens if I do not keep maintenance records?

Your licence may not be renewed. Inspectors ask the licence holder for maintenance and waste disposal records, and without a year of them the licence is not reissued. We send both after every visit, so the file builds itself and there is nothing to dig for when the inspector arrives.

Where does the grease waste go?

It leaves with us and is disposed of under our national waste collection permit. You get the disposal record afterwards, and that record is one of the six documents an inspector asks the licence holder to produce.

My trap is blocked now. Can you come out?
