What a Collapse Looks Like

A collapse shows above ground as often as below it. These four signs are what bring most people to our door.

How We Confirm the Collapse

Collapsed drain repair is a big job, so we never take a dig on trust. We prove the collapse before we price it.
technician drain survey driveway
A blocked pipe and a collapsed one look the same when full. We clear the run first so the camera can read the pipe cleanly.
The survey shows whether the pipe has caved, the length of the broken section and its exact position along the run.
We trace the line electronically to mark position and depth on the ground, keeping the excavation tight to the pipe.
You look at the footage before we price anything. If it is a collapse, it is plain on screen, and if it is not, that is plain too.

Top service by Alec and the lads. Drains were blocked, they showed up quickly, left the place tidy after, and very reasonably priced.

We had an extremely positive experience with Davis Drain Services. Within minutes of calling them out of hours, they arrived to our house to clear a blocked septic tank. It was pumped out promptly before returning the following morning to rectify the issue. At all times they made us feel at ease and explained everything to us clearly. While on site they also provided helpful advice on how to rectify heating issues we were having. We would have no hesitation recommending them for both drainage and plumbing works. Thanks to Alec and team.

Just had Alec out to look at an issue with my boiler. We were without heat and he arrived so quickly after being contacted. He was able to pinpoint the issue straight away and had it fixed in minutes. I also asked advice on an issue with my drains that I have been encountering for a few years and he was able to give me advice on how fix it. Thank you Alec, I am very grateful for all you help.

What Collapsed Drain Repair Costs

Three things drive the cost: the length of collapsed pipe, its depth, and the surface above it. Treat the figures below as estimates for budgeting. We quote for real once the survey is done.
Estimate

Dig and replace

€300 to €600 per metre

Digging down to the collapsed section, lifting out the broken pipe and laying new.

Estimate

Putting the surface back

€500 to €2,000 on top

Restoring the driveway, path or patio the excavation had to cut through.

Estimate

A typical house collapse

€1,500 to €4,000 all in

A single collapsed section on a house drain, dug out, replaced and made good.

Priced

The survey first

Separately per survey

How We Repair a Collapse

The whole job runs in five stages, camera first, ground reinstated last. That last stage is the one worth checking any quote for.

Collapsed Drain Questions Answered

The questions we get asked most before a repair.
What is a collapsed drain?
A collapsed drain is an underground pipe that has cracked, caved or broken out of shape, so waste stops passing through. A blockage sits inside a sound pipe and can be cleared. A collapse is damage to the pipe itself, so the failed section has to be replaced.
Collapsed drain repair in Ireland usually costs €300 to €600 per metre to excavate and replace, with €500 to €2,000 on top to reinstate a driveway or patio the dig went through. A single collapsed section in a house drain typically lands between €1,500 and €4,000 all in. We survey first, then price it.

A CCTV drain survey is the only way to know for certain, because the footage shows whether the pipe has lost its shape and how long the damaged section is. Above ground, the usual signs are repeat blockages in one spot, sunken ground, cracks near the drain run, and damp or odour that will not clear.

Drains collapse from age and deterioration of older pipework, ground movement, tree roots forcing joints apart, heavy loads passing over a shallow pipe, and poor original installation. Most collapses build up slowly over years rather than happening all at once.

A fully collapsed section cannot be repaired without digging. Once the pipe loses its shape, a liner has nothing to bond to, so that length must be excavated and replaced. Damage short of a collapse, like a crack or displaced joint, can often be fixed with no-dig pipe re-lining.

Most domestic collapsed drain repairs take a few days on site. The drain is usually back in use the same day the new pipe goes in, with backfilling and surface reinstatement following after. Deeper runs and anything under a driveway take longer.

Pipework inside your property boundary is normally your responsibility. Beyond it, the public sewer belongs to Uisce Éireann, and a shared drain serving several houses is usually the joint responsibility of the households on it. A survey shows which side of the boundary the collapse sits on, so you know where you stand.
