Tree roots in drains almost never break through sound pipe. They slip in at an existing crack or loose joint, then grow into a mass that traps waste.
Clay pipe joints that have opened up
Clay pipe root ingress starts at the joints. Older sections were sealed rigidly, and as the seal fails, fine roots slip in and thicken.
Cracked or shifted pipe sections
Ground movement and heavy vehicles crack pipes or knock them out of line. Roots in drain pipes need only a hairline opening to get in.
Large trees growing near your drains
A mature tree takes water from a wide area around it. If your drain runs through that area, its roots can find any leak.
Pipes with little soil cover
Most roots grow in the top layer of soil, where there is water and air. A drain laid shallow sits right in that zone.
Cracked brick manhole chambers
Older brick manholes crack and lose mortar. Roots get in through the walls, often where you first spot them.
Soft pitch fibre drains
Pitch fibre root damage is different: roots don't need a joint. The pipe wall itself weakens and blisters, and roots break through it.

Tree roots in pipes run from fine hairs to thick masses, and each method suits a different level of growth. A CCTV drain survey shows which one your pipe needs before any cutting starts.
We show you the roots on camera, explain which method fits and give you the price. You say yes before any cutting starts.
The gentlest option. High-pressure water jetting spins a cutter through the roots and flushes the line, with no digging.
A rotating blade cuts through root masses too dense for water. The survey footage shows exactly where to cut.
A remote-controlled cutter with its own camera grinds through the toughest roots. Kept for jobs other methods can't clear.
If the camera shows the pipe has collapsed, the damaged section is dug out and replaced. Always the last resort.

We had an extremely positive experience with Davis Drain Services. Within minutes of calling them out of hours, they arrived to our house to clear a blocked septic tank. It was pumped out promptly before returning the following morning to rectify the issue. At all times they made us feel at ease and explained everything to us clearly. While on site they also provided helpful advice on how to rectify heating issues we were having. We would have no hesitation recommending them for both drainage and plumbing works. Thanks to Alec and team.Posted on Google![]()

Just had Alec out to look at an issue with my boiler. We were without heat and he arrived so quickly after being contacted. He was able to pinpoint the issue straight away and had it fixed in minutes. I also asked advice on an issue with my drains that I have been encountering for a few years and he was able to give me advice on how fix it. Thank you Alec, I am very grateful for all you help.Posted on Google![]()

Great service, fast call out lovely team
Cutting clears the blockage, but the gap the roots used is still open. Regrowth often follows within months.
The cutter clears the inside of the pipe and leaves the crack as it was. Water still leaks out, and roots follow it back in.
Cutting stops at the pipe wall. Any root growing through the joint itself stays alive and grows back into the pipe.
Roots often block at one joint first while others along the run are already letting them in.
Felling the tree won't stop roots already in the pipe, and some species keep growing from the stump. Sealing the pipe is the surer fix.
Root cutting and pipe relining can be booked together, so the pipe is sealed before roots return. The lining goes in through the manhole, with no digging.
Most root cutting costs between €200 and €400, CCTV survey included. Your price depends on how far the roots have spread and how hard they are to clear.
We run the camera first, show you the footage, and quote the clearing. Nothing starts until you agree.
This covers root cutting and clearing. If the pipe needs relining, that is quoted separately after you see the footage.
It depends on whose tree it is. Here is how each case works in Ireland.
If your own tree caused it, the repair is yours to pay. Some home insurance policies cover drain damage, so check yours.
We clear the roots and can quote relining on the day.
You may recover the cost from the owner. The Tree Council of Ireland says a claim is possible if the roots are proven to cause damage.
Use our CCTV footage and report as evidence.
Your local council is normally responsible for trees it owns. Report the root damage in writing and include your CCTV evidence.
Send the council our CCTV footage and report.
Clear answers on cost, regrowth, digging and who pays.
The clearest sign is a drain that blocks again and again in the same spot. Slow drainage that worsens over weeks, gurgling from gullies and roots visible in the manhole are others. If the drain keeps blocking after drain unblocking, roots are a likely cause, and a camera survey confirms it.
Drain root removal usually costs between €200 and €400, including the CCTV survey. Light roots cleared by jetting sit at the lower end, while thick roots that need a root cutter sit higher in the range. Relining, if the pipe needs it, is quoted separately.
Usually, yes. Roots return through the same gap unless the pipe is repaired, and a healthy tree keeps searching for water. Drain relining after root cutting is the usual way to close the gap without digging. We can quote it on the day, once you have seen the footage.
No digging is needed for most root removal. Cutters and jets reach the roots from the nearest manhole, which keeps your lawn, patio and driveway intact. Only a collapsed pipe needs excavation.
Root killer may kill the roots inside the pipe, but it leaves the crack open for new growth. If the roots come from a neighbour’s tree, the Tree Council of Ireland says you have no legal right to poison them, citing the Criminal Damage Act 1991.
Most domestic root cutting jobs are finished within a few hours, including the camera survey. Heavy root growth or a long pipe run takes longer, and the survey gives a clearer idea of the time needed.
If the camera shows open joints or cracks after cutting, relining is worth considering, because those gaps are how roots get back in. Relining suits certain types of damage and goes in through the manhole with no digging. Ask for a relining price alongside your root cutting quote.
Some policies pay for root damage to drains and some don’t, so the answer is in your policy wording. Ring your insurer before any repair work. If you do claim, our CCTV report gives them the evidence of what happened and where.
Tell us what you are seeing and we will come back with a price. CCTV survey included on every visit.
